Top features of the MINI Electric

Electric cars have been around for a while now, in fact the first production ready electric vehicle is probably older than you think – Thomas Parker created the first electric car in London, in 1884. Of course there have been some improvements since then, but it could still be argued that for the main part, until quite recently, electric vehicles were a compromised choice.

That started to change a few years ago, and today you’ll find that an electric car is pretty much identical (in practical terms) to its fossil-fuelled counterpart. One such car is the MINI Electric.

First and foremost, the MINI Electric is a MINI; there is no mistaking its heritage for any other brand, the look of the electric version is near identical to the petrol version, even the fuel filler flap (or in this case, the electric charging point flap) is in exactly the same place as the fossil-fuel version.

The engineers at MINI have given thought to the design and layout of the electric powertrain – this hasn’t been made to just satisfy an opportunity in a shifting market. MINIs are known for their go-kart like handling, and thanks to the battery placement on the electric MINI, you get the same driving experience; hugging the road like it’s on rails. Well, hugging the road like a MINI for want of a better example.

As standard, the MINI Electric comes with two charging cables – a standard power cable that works with your regular plug sockets at home which is ideal for the occasional charge, or when your MINI is resting overnight, and the second charge cable has been designed to take the greater supply at public charge points, or with a Homecharge unit.

This means that there’s three different levels of charge rate; the slowest charge rate is from a standard domestic three-pin plug, which takes around 12-hours for a complete charge. There’s also a fast charge rate – from 7.4kW to 11kW which takes around 3.5 hours for a complete charge, and then you can also connect to the rapid chargers (at 50kW) for an 80% charge in approximately 36 minutes.

And then there’s the MINI performance – a MINI Cooper S can do the 0-62mph sprint in just 6.5 seconds, the MINI Electric has that covered in just 7.3 seconds, going on to a top speed of 93mph, which is more than enough performance for today’s roads.
